Monterey County gets first-ever flag as final design chosen By Jim Johnson, Monterey Herald

POSTED: 08/29/18, 3:23 PM PDT, Salinas

Watsonville artist Priscilla Martinez’s design illustrating a collection of iconic Monterey County landmarks and symbols was unanimously chosen by the Board of Supervisors on Tuesday for the county’s first-ever official flag.

The 33-year-old Nob Hill grocery store clerk’s design incorporated Monterey’s historic Colton Hall with the U.S. flag flying above, the Pinnacles National Park peaks, California’s red star, the Lone Cypress tree, ocean and farm fields with a condor soaring above the circular image set against a green background with the words “Monterey County” at the base.

Martinez, whose award-winning work was previously chosen as the 2017 Strawberry Festival image, beat out two other artists — Lisa Bryan and Jessica Matias — for the local honor. In fact, her work was so well-regarded that she had two designs among the final four chosen from 24 different submissions for the new county flag.

Supervisor Luis Alejo, a fellow Watsonville native, said all four final designs were “great” but Martinez’s design stood out because of its color scheme and various design elements, including the symbols representing the county’s diverse regions.

“Priscilla is an amazing artist whose work often wins other area contests,” Alejo said. “It’s also great that she is a young woman of color and that’s inspiring for other minority and young artists throughout the Monterey Bay region.”

Martinez’s winning design originally finished second to fellow artist Lisa Bryan’s design in a vote of a flag selection committee that included Alejo, Supervisor Simon Salinas and representatives from the other supervisorial districts. Martinez’s design emerged after a revision process and was ultimately approved by the full board on Tuesday.

Bryan’s design was fashioned like a coat of arms bracketed by a cypress tree and a cluster of grapes and including images ranging from the Monterey harbor with Moss Landing power plant stacks in the background and the Pinnacles peaks above farm fields and grape rows with a lone oak tree to Colton Hall with a grizzly bear walking on the lawn in front, the Bixby Bridge, the Carmel Mission, and a redwood, pine trees and California poppies. An earlier version featured a whale’s tail underneath the coat of arms but was later removed.

Supervisor Mary Adams said she was also pleased with the final design and the participation of so many artists in submitting designs for the flag, but added that she was concerned about taking staff time for such an endeavor when so many other “pressing issues” needed to be addressed. Adams said she would have been satisfied simply using the county seal for the flag design.

The estimated cost of about $2,300 is expected cover the production of three flags, one for the board chambers, and two to fly above the County Government Center on West Alisal Street and the County Government Center on Schilling Place.

Alejo said his office also plans to purchase flags.
