Description of the flag

There is a new version of the Yolo County flag. When I first saw the flag being flown in front of the courthouse, a map of the county in green had been added in the center stripe behind Ceres. Since it is a windy day, I tried to get a picture of the current flag flying well, however, the flags are being flown at half staff. For some reason, the county flies three flags on the same line, US, California, and Yolo County, and they put a full flag width space between them. So flying at half staff puts the county flag too low and it was not included on the line today. I have attached a photo that I took some time ago, but it is folded and will only give an idea what the new version has.

Here is a picture of the flag taken yesterday as it was being inspected by the head of the Yolo County Archives. Not sure yet how it will be handled, but if they will display in a dignified manner then the family will give the flag back to the rightful owners. Dad was always worried that the flag would simply be forgotten, hence the reason he stored it away for so many years.

According the our information, the flag was designed by a lady named Helen while she worked at the county Agricultural Commissioner's Office for Charles Hardy, sometime in the 1930s. Charles and my dad (Herbert W. Chandler) were close friends and dad followed Charles as Ag Commissioner in the 1960s. Dad told me that the flag was designed by folks who worked for the Ag Dept but never said who or when. So it would seem that now we know when the flag was made and by whom, or at least one of the individuals that was involved in the design of the flag. The only question is, why weren't more of these flags made and flown at county buildings?

I have also enclosed copies of material found in the flag storage bag, one of course suggests that it not be destroyed and the other provides a description of the flag.

"This is the original Yolo County Flag", and the Legend of the Yolo County Flag: "The central figure on the flag is Ceres, who is the Greek goddess of products of the earth or Agriculture. The blue stripe at the top represents the climate. The golden brown stripe at the bottom represents the productive soil of the county. The ivory field in the center is used to coordinate the blue and golden brown representing the climate and soil, as these two things are the principal factors for Yolo being an agricultural section. The year 1850 is the year in which Yolo County became one of the 58 counties of California."
