Description of the flag

The flag of Julian was adopted after a contest started in May 2021. Sixteen proposals were made, the winner being 11-year-old Anju Greene. According to the designer: "The flag design represents the geography of Julian — the rising sun or moon over the historical mountains, deserts and golden fields, reflecting on Lake Cuyamaca...The star represents the clear night skies of Julian and a wishing star for gold miners.” The flag was hoisted in the Pioneer Park on September 18.

An article by Gilbert Pritchard in Vexillum describes the flag:

Julian, California ... had no single image or symbol that unified the 151-year old town.
In May 2021, I started the Julian flag contest. A total of 16 designs were submitted.
The most common graphic theme among the submissions was Julian's unique natura landscape and remarkable night sky.
The winning flag was designed by Anju Greene, a young local artist. Her design represents the geography and history of Julian.
The dark blue color represents the sky at dusk and dawn, the star being the first star seen at night or the last star seen at dawn. The star also represents Julian's recent acknowledgement as a Dark Sky community. The moon or sun is seen rising over the mountains, desert, meadows, and Lake Cuyamaca, a local water source.
The yellow represents the gold ore mined and mountain meadows.
Even though the flags was not officially adopted by Julian's Community Board, it is serving as the town's de facto flag.

The flag was not officially adopted. The last sentence in the Vexillum article written by Gilbert Pritchrd, states the flag was not adopted by the town of Julian. Unless it was adopted after this article (June 2022), the flag has never been adopted.

Julian is not a town in a legal sense, rather it is a census-designated place. There is an informal "town hall" (which functions as the community center and has its own community board) and that does fly the Julian flag. I've seen it in person late in 2022 and this can also be seen on Google Maps. Some months after, I even asked Gilbert where the flag could be purchased in town, and he responded by saying it could be purchased at the town hall.
