CHAPTER 12: COUNTY SEAL, FLAG, SONG, THEME, AND MOTTO

Section
2-2 County seal
2-3 County flag

§ 2-2 COUNTY SEAL.

(A) The County Seal was designed by Pearl Setzer Deal (Mrs.Loy E.) of Hickory, and officially adopted by the Board of Commissioners on September 7, 1925.

(B) The shield is divided into four parts, representing the national colors, red, white, and blue, with the fourth color of royal purple representing the blending of the national red and blue into royal purple. The county, through the royal purple, stands by the national colors.

(C) The four emblems are the cross in the field of red to represent religion which was established with the earliest settlers; the torch in the field of white representing education which was established along with the church in the earliest days; the cow in the royal purple representing the farming upon which the county has always depended and the dairying which made the county famous far and wide; and the wheel in the field of blue to represent the manufacturing of the county.

Ord. No 2006-12, enacted Oct. 16, 2006 (Supplement No 2)

Editor's note: The county seal is reproduced inside the field of the county flag, set forth in §2-3 below.

§ 2-3 COUNTY FLAG.

The official flag for the county was adopted by the Board of Commissioners on Monday, December 16, 1991. It was designed by Mrs. Rosemarie Hylton Hefner of Newton. The design expresses pride in the heritage and lifestyles of the community. The County Seal is symbolic of the strong religious beliefs, pride in outstanding educational opportunities, agricultural and manufacturing growth. Since the County Seal is representative of these facts, it is in the center of the flag. The background is the layout of the state flag, since the county is part of the beautiful State of North Carolina."

The seal for different graphic uses (including a colour version with black lettering!) is given on the county website: www.catawbacountync.gov/misc/dirofsvc/kids/catcographics.htm.
