Description of the flag

The flag of Cheatham County, Tennessee, adopted in 1996, and designed by me. The 16 stars represent Tennessee's position as the 16th member of the American Union. The white shape in the blue disk is a silhouette map of the county.
Devereaux D. Cannon, 17 August 1998

From www.rootsweb.com/~tncheath/:

THE FLAG OF CHEATHAM COUNTY

The Cheatham County Flag was the brainchild of Ms. Louise Murphy, retired Cheatham County School Teacher. She was overheard talking to then Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Sandy Weis, on the local WQSV Radio broadcast of the 1994 Homecoming Parade in Ashland City, by CCHGA member Jim Allen. Jim sent Ms. Murphy a letter with a drawing of a proposed flag. She in turn made copies of the letter and presented them to members at a meeting of CCHGA in August 1994. Members of the Association, under the direction of the President, Thelma Heflin, initiated action to come up with a flag suitable to the County Commission. CCHGA member, R. D. Huffines was appointed Chairman of a Committee to conduct a contest and search for the appropriate flag design.

The contest was completed in June 1995 and submitted to the Cheatham County Historical and Genealogical Association members who picked the best ten entries for submission to a panel of artists from Austin Peay University to judge the best of the lot. They in turn selected three of the ten and sent them back to CCHGA. The membership of the historical Association then picked the one considered most desirable and submitted it to the County Commission in July 1995 where it was adopted as the Flag of Cheatham County, Tennessee.

The flag accepted was submitted by Mr. W. R. Baker of Ashland City and was based on a design by Mr. Devereaux Cannon, Jr. of Portland, Tennessee. The general design of the flag is inspired by our revolutionary heritage. The colors of the flag are the U. S. Flag colors of Red, White and Blue. The Union of the flag has a red field, centered on which is a round blue field, bordered in white. Its design is derived from the flag of the State of Tennessee. The three stars of the Tennessee flag are replaced by a silhouette map of Cheatham County. A circle of 16 white stars in the red field represent Tennessee's position as the 16th state to enter the Union, and is in commemoration of Tennessee's bicentennial observance. The Union of the flag is square, and equal on its sides to two-thirds the width of the flag.

The balance of the flag is three equal horizontal stripes of blue, white, and blue. The two blue stripes represent the Harpeth and Cumberland rivers. The white stripe separating them represents the hopes of the people of Cheatham County for a future grounded in peace, prosperity and liberty.
