Spotsylvania County is in the eastern portion of the commonwealth, just south of the city of Fredericksburg. The county was named for one of Virginia's colonial governors, Alexander Spotswood. The flag is a green field with the county seal displayed in the center. The seal incorporates as its focal point the full achievement of arms of Royal Governor Alexander Spotswood, for whom the county is named. For those who don't know, Spotsylvania is one of the two counties that surround the city of Fredericksburg (the other being Stafford County) on the Rappahannock River. The county is located in eastern central Virginia, and is roughly halfway between Washington, DC, and the state capital in
Richmond. The county was formed in 1721 from King and Queen County. I am not sure what the motto in the arms means ("Patior ut Potiar"), but would be greatly interested to know if anyone on the list could tell me

Randy neglected to point out that Spotsylvania is a pun on the governor's name, "sylvania" meaning "forest" or "woods" (cf. Pennsylvania, "Penn's Woods," and Transylvania ("on the other side of the forest"). According to a couple of web sites, the motto means "I suffer (or endure) so that I may win possession (or conquer."

The former sheriff's office flag is brown with the previous uniform sleeve patch displayed in the center, and the words "SHERIFF" in gold above the patch and "SPOTSYLVANIA COUNTY, VA" in gold below the patch. The flag was replaced earlier in 2013 when the new sheriff replaced the sleeve patch and uniform colors for the officers and deputies. Like the current flag, I have never seen this one flown outside, only displayed indoors or carried on parade.

Spotsylvania County, Virginia, is served by two fire departments and two rescue departments. Chancellor Volunteer Fire & Rescue provides fire and rescue squad service to the northern and eastern parts of Spotsylvania County, encompassing roughly those areas that include the American Civil War battlefields of Chancellorsville and the Wilderness. Spotsylvania Volunteer Fire Department covers the remainder of the county. Spotsylvania Volunteer Rescue Squad serves the entire county with ambulance service and overlaps with Chancellor VFR. Chancellor VFR serves the part of the county where my family and I live.

Arched above the logo is the word "CHANCELLOR" in gold letters outlined in black, with the word "VOLUNTEER" arching below the logo in similar letters. Across the bottom of the flag are the words "SPOTSYLVANIA COUNTY" in smaller, white letters.
