Naval ranks ensigns

The naval ranks ensigns show the presence of an officer on board a Navy ship. The President of the Republic as Supreme Commander of the Armed forces does have his own rank. The Minister of Defense as delegate of the president in this area does it too.

In Uruguay, command Navy officers ranks ensigns are white flags with anchors and stars with differences according to the rank. There are also blue ranks ensigns intended for Army or Air Force officers on board. However the status of these officers is different because they do not have command.

Government ranks ensigns

President of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay

(current)

[President of Uruguay]
by Željko Heimer, 20 Jul 2003

The President of Uruguay uses a flag of white with the national coat of arms in the center. (Sources: [smi80], [tal82] and [cra90])
by Calvin Paige Herring, 13 Jun 1998

Nowadays, the presidential mark shows also four blue cabled anchors, one on each corner of the white field.
Armand Noel du Payrat, 15 Jun 1998

Ratio: 2:3
White flag with the coat of arms in the middle and four blue anchors, one in each corner. The cables of the anchors as well as the ring are coloured in a lighter shade of blue, but I don't know if that was intentional. (Source: Album 2000 [pay00]).
Željko Heimer, 20 Jul 2003

(previous)

[President of Uruguay]
by Željko Heimer, 20 Jul 2003

In previous sources, some quoted on FOTW: [smi80], [tal82], [cra90], the presidential flag is without the anchors.
Željko Heimer, 20 Jul 2003

In Flaggenbuch 1939 [neu39] the Presidential flag had a different ratio.
Francisco Gregoric, 16 Aug 2004

Minister of Defense

[Defense Minister]
by Željko Heimer, 20 Jul 2003

Current: The Minister of Defense has a flag with four stars, one on each corner; the anchor cable is 4 times twisted (instead of 3 times in old drawing)
Armand Noel du Payrat, 15 Jun 1998

Previous: a flag of white with a foul anchor centered and a star on either side in blue. (Source: [bcr81])
Calvin Paige Herring, 11 Jun 1998

Ratio: 2:3
White flag with blue cabled anchor in the middle and four blue stars, one in each corner. The blue cable and ring are again of different blue then the rest. (Source: Album 2000 [pay00]).
Željko Heimer, 20 Jul 2003

In Flaggenbuch 1939 [neu39] the Minister of Defense flag had a different design.

Navy officers rank ensigns (with command)

Naval Ranks ensigns for Navy Officers.

Commander in Chief of the Navy

[Commander in Chief]
by Calvin Paige Herring, 11 Jul 1998

Nowadays, the flag for Commander in Chief of the Navy, has one blue anchor and three blue stars around the anchor.

Neither the denomination "General Inspector of the Navy" nor his flag are in use. "General Inspector" is the old name for the Commander in Chief of each force (army, navy and air force). Source: Uruguayan Navy.
Jorge Lorenzo18 Feb 2002

Ratio: 2:3
White flag with blue cabled anchor in the middle and three blue stars, one in top center and one in each lower corner.

Similar flag with two stars is shown in 1939 Flaggenbuch for Inspector General of the Navy, so the third star was added, presumably afterwards, when the rank of the function was upgraded. (Source: Album 2000 [pay00]).
Željko Heimer, 20 Jul 2003

Vice Admiral

[Vice Admiral]
by Calvin Paige Herring, 12 Jul 1998

Source is apparently Flaggenbuch [neu39]; this is not shown in Album 2000 [pay00] - is Vice Admiral an obsolete rank?
Ivan Sache, 10 Jan 2001

The Vice Admiral flag is not in use, but the flag is conserved for special situations. Source: Uruguayan Navy.
Jorge Lorenzo18 Feb 2002

Ratio: 2:3
White flag with three blue stars, one in top center and one in each lower corner.

Similar flag differing only in overall ratio is shown in the 1939 Flaggenbuch [neu39].

The size of stars (i.e. diameter of the circle circumscribuing them - here and in other flags) seems to be 1/5 of the hoist.
Željko Heimer, 20 Jul 2003

Rear Admiral

[Rear Admiral]
by Calvin Paige Herring, 12 Jul 1998

Source is apparently Flaggenbuch [neu39].
Ivan Sache, 10 Jan 2001

Ratio: 2:3
White flag with two blue stars, along horizontal median. (Source: Album 2000 [pay00]).
Željko Heimer, 20 Jul 2003

In Flaggenbuch 1939 [neu39] the Insignia de Contra Almirante (Rear Admiral Ensign) had a different ratio.
Francisco Gregoric, 16 Aug 2004

Captain in Command of a Naval Force

[Captain in Command of a Naval Force]
by Calvin Paige Herring, 12 Jul 1998

Source is apparently Flaggenbuch [neu39].
Ivan Sache, 10 Jan 2001

Captain Commanding a Naval Base ratio: 2:3
White flag with single blue five-pointed star in the middle. (Source: Album 2000 [pay00])

The flag is shown in 1939 Flaggenbuch [neu39] but not in 1926 issue (just as all of the flags in the pattern, differing only in ratio there 3:5), so it must have been adopted in between.
Željko Heimer, 26 Jul 2003

Chief of a Group (rank below captain)

[Chief of a Group (Less than a Captain)]
by Ivan Sache, 10 Jan 2001

Source is Album 2000 [pay00].
Ivan Sache, 10 Jan 2001

Chief of Naval Group (rank below Captain) ratio: 1:2
White triangular pennant with a blue cross.

Similar as in 1939 Flaggenbuch [neu39] but there the pennant has considerably thinner cross.
Željko Heimer, 26 Jul 2003

Commission Pennant

[Commission Pennant]
by Željko Heimer, 01 Feb 1999

Source is apparently Flaggenbuch [neu39].
Ivan Sache, 10 Jan 2001

Masthead (Commision) Pennant ratio: 1:10
White-blue-white triangular pennant (each stripe decreasing in width as it departs from hoist) with a white field at hoist contianing the yellow sun.

The caption in Album writes ratio 1:10, but the image clarly showes a pennant of 1:20~.

According to sources available to me, the pennant is shown already in 1926 Flaggenbuch, so it must be older then that, at least. (Source: Album 2000 [pay00])
Željko Heimer, 26 Jul 2003

The commission pennant is called Gallardete in Uruguay (and in other Spanish speaking countries).

This flag is used by the Comandante en Jefe del Ejército (Commander in Chief of the Army), or by the Comandante en Jefe de la Fuerza Aérea (Commander in Chief of the Air Force) when they are on board Navy ships.
Francisco Gregoric, 16 Aug 2004

Francisco Gregoric, 17 Aug 2004

Chief Major General of the Army or Air Force

[Chief Major General]
by Calvin Paige Herring, 11 Jul 1998

This flag is used by the Jefe del Estado Mayor General del Ejército (Chief Major General of the Army), or by the Jefe del Estado Mayor General de la Fuerza Aérea (Chief Major General of the Air Force) when they are on board Navy ships.
