Overview

In Der Spiegel, 28 March 2012 [zwf12], Bastian Sick aka Der Zwiebelfisch, explains the difference between the two words used in German for a flag, "Fahne" and "Flagge". In brief, the two words, originally designing two kinds of flags, are now synonyms. Originally, a Fahne was used on land while a Flagge was used at sea. The very same difference exists in French between a drapeau and a pavillon: Album des Pavillons is the exact counterpart of Flaggenbuch, the two books dealing with flags at sea. Unsurprisingly, only the word "Fahne" is used in Switzerland.
