Apolda Coat of Arms

Shield Or, a stomp Sable with saplings of the same issuant from stomp with leaves Vert.
Meaning:
The village was first mentioned in 1119. In 1123 the nearby castle was manned by a local kin in service of the Archbishopric of Mainz. In 1308 Apolda was called a city. In 1348 it became a dominion of the Wettin kin and became part of the Electorate of Sachsen, ruled by the Ernestine branch of the kin, in 1485. Formally it had still been a fiefdom of the archbishopric but without any importance. The archbishops withdrew completely in 1666. Between 1633 and 1837 the University of Jena had been the manorial lord of city and castle including the local cognisance. The arms are based on local seals, which first appeared in the 16th century. When the arms were officially granted, it was mentioned that the trunk symbolised the "ever renewing character of the city". The stomp probably belongs to a canting apple tree. The pattern often was changed in detail.

A plain tricolour was in use at least since 1941, probably earlier. The arms were granted with crest on 17 December 1856. The current symbols are mentioned in §2 of the local Hauptsatzung, version 22 February 1999.
