Coat of Arms

Description of coat of arms:
In a blue field are standing two apostles, on the dexter side St.Peter, holding a golden (=yellow) book and a silver (=white) upright key, on the sinister side St.Paul holding a silver (=white) upright sword. Both are robed and nimbed golden (no hats!). In front of the pair is an inescutcheon divided per pale. The dexter side, a silver(=white) field, is divided by a black centred cross, superimposed by silver(=white) cross). The blue dexter side is superimposed by a golden (=yellow) fess.
Meaning:
According to source until 1973 the city used the current inescutcheon as its coat of arms (see also Stadler 1972, p.95). The inescutcheon is symbolizing the fact, that the city was a condominium of the archbishoprics of Köln (symbolized by the dexter side) and Münster (symbolized by the sinister side.) from 1252 until 1352. The former coat of arms, as shown in a map of Gigas from 1616 shows on the sinister side a red fess in a golden field. Those colours were the genuine colours of the archbishopric of Münster. In the 18th was erroneously assumed that the archbishopric of Münster used a blue shield with a golden fess. These erroneous tinctures had been overtaken by the city. The current coat of arms is based upon the image of the city's seal from the 17th century. Despite of the colours the current arms are inspired by an painting of Hupp. St.Peter is patron saint of Köln, St.Paul of Münster.
