Shield Argent; in base an inescutcheon Azure, charged with a fleur-de-lis Argent; issuant from inescutcheon St. Catherine, robed Gules, nimbed and haired Or, holding a sword Argent hilted Or in her right hand and a broken 5-spokes wheel Or in her left hand.
Meaning:
The current pattern already appeared on the oldest known city seal from the end of the 16th century and was kept in all seals until the 20th century. St. Catherine is the patron saint of the local Protestant church. She is depicted with her attributes wheel and sword, the instruments of her martyrdom and execution. From the 1940ies until 1997 the city only used the blue shield with the fleur-de-lis, which displayed the personal arms of the first abbess of the Wolmirstedt Cistercian Nunnery (1228 - 1577). Based on a decision from 18 october 1952 the city had different arms from 1953 until 1986.
