The seat of the county is Erlangen. During the 1972 municipal reform, Erlangen county was united with the (then Upper Franconian) Höchstadt County to form the new county Erlangen-Höchstadt.

Erlangen-Höchstadt County Coat of Arms

Shield parted per pale; at dexter Or a sinister facing lion rampant Sable, armed and tongued Gules and superimposed by a bendlet sinister Argent; at sinister Azure a demi scoop wheel Or couped per pale.
Meaning:
The arms are a combination of the arms of the two former counties. The scoop wheel is taken from the arms of Erlangen County, the lion from the arms of Höchstadt County. The dexter half is a differentiation of the arms of the Archbishopric of Bamberg.

Erlangen County Coat of Arms

Shield Or a scoop wheel Azure, bordure of 16 pieces alternatin of Gules and Argent.
Meaning:
The county is a combination of two main historical territories. A major part of the county was ruled by the Margraves of Brandenburg-Bayreuth and the bordure in the arms is taken from the arms of the margraves. The colours of the bordure are taken from the arms of the city of Nürnberg, who ruled the other part of the county. The scoop wheel is representing theirrigation along the Regnitz River in the county.

Höchstadt County until 1972

The county was integrated into the (Central Franconian) Erlangen-Höchstadt county under the 1972 municipal reform.

Höchstadt County Coat of Arms

Shield parted per pale; at dexter Or a sinister facing lion rampant Sable, armed and tongued Gules and superimposed by a bendlet sinister Argent; at sinister Sable, a unicorn rampant Or on top of a mount issuant Argent and behind a fir of the same.
Meaning:
The dexter half of the shield displays the black lion of Bamberg. The Archbishops of Bamberg were one of the largest land owners in the county. The unicorn is taken from the arms of the Ritterkanton Steigerwald, one of the historical territories in the district. The arms with the unicorn were granted in 1718 by Emperor Karl VI.
