Coat of Arms

Shield Azure; an embattled wall Argent with port Gules, charged with a 6-spokes wheel Argent, and crowned by a tower Argent roofed Gules, flanked by two impending mitres Argent with bordures Or.
Meaning:
The settlement Naumburg was founded around a castle by the Counts of Naumburg in 1200 and was mentioned as a city in 1230, having a proper seal since 1271. The seal displayed a tower behind a city wall, on each side of the tower a head, one wearing a mitre. The heads symbolised the rulers of the city, the Counts on Naumburg and the Archbishops of Mainz. In 1284 the Archbishop became the only ruler and since then the second head was also shown with a mitre. In the city wall a gate appeared with the wheel, the symbol of the Archbishopric of Mainz. In the 19th the heads were removed by mitres and the composition was placed into a shield to form the present arms. The position of the mitres changed slightly.
