Coat of arms

Description of coat of arms:
In a silver field is a red gate, masoned black with two embattled towers. In the open door is a pair of two golden(=yellow) keys crossed saltirishly in a blue field. The gate is topped by a golden(=yellow), facetted 6-point star.
Meaning:
According to source the current coat of arms is based upon the image shown in the most ancient main seal of the city. The colours red and silver and the pair of keys as well are saymbolizing the former bishopric of Minden. The star is representing bishop Volkwin von Schwalenberg, who granted the rights of a city to Lübbecke in 1279.

Former Coat of Arms

Description of former coat of arms:
In a red field is a pair of two silver(=white) keys crossed saltirishly. The pair is topped by a golden(=yellow) 6-point star.
Meaning:
According to Stadler 1972 the coat of arms was in use since 16th century. The colours red and silver and the pair of keys as well are symbolizing the former bishopric of Minden. The star is representing bishop Volkwin von Schwalenberg, who granted the rights of a city to Lübbecke in 1279.
The former arms were granted officially by the Prussian king in 1908.
