Lommatzsch Coat of Arms

Coat of Arms: Schield Argent, issuant from base an embattled wall Gules masoned Sable without port, issuant from wall the western façade of a church Gules with spires Azure topped by balls Argent, port and windows Argent, in port a lion rampant Sable under a portcullis of the same.
Meaning:
The Daleminze Shire was subdued by the German King Heinrich I in 929. In Lommatzsch was a fortress of the inhabitants of the shire. The existence of a church is proven since 1190. Around 1200 a new village developed at the crossroads between Leipzig, Meißen, Freiberg and Großenhain. The village was called a city in 1268. The city was ruled by the Burgraves of Meißen and since 1408 by the Margraves of Meißen. A city council and a mayor existed since 1348. The high level cognisance was pawned in the 16th century. The arms are based on a city seal from 1461. At least until 1989 the open port in the arms had been golden. The symbols are mainly referring to the status of a city. The lion is taken from the arms of the margraves, local rulers since 1408.
