Torgau Coat of Arms

Shield quartered, 1st and 4th quarter Argent four chevrons Gules, 2nd and 3rd quarter Azure a lion rampant Argent armed and tongued Gules.
Meaning:
In 973 Emperor Otto II donated Torgau to the Archbishopric of Madgeburg. Later the city was ruled by the Margraves of Meißen and was acquired by the Wettin kin in 1463, where it belonged to the Electorate of Sachsen-Wittenberg. It became the capital of the Saxonian Electorate in 1525, finally in 1547. After the 30-Years-War (1618-1648) the city declined. There is not much known about the arms. The tinctures might be those of Bayern, as the mother of Elector Friedrich III came from there. The lions might be a differentiation of those of the Margraves of Meißen. Their arms displayed a black lion on a golden field. Nothing is known about the chevrons. Torgau had been the home town of the elector.

The arms were granted by Elector Friedrich II the Wise of Sachsen on 11 June 1514. The banner is probably used without approval.
