Appenweier Coat of Arms

In a golden (= yellow) field is St. Michael, dressed and winged blue, killing a green dragon by a lance. The saint bears a blue shield divided by a golden (= yellow) cross.
Meaning:
The village was first mentioned in 884 as a dominion of Honau Abbey. The first time a local court of the Ortenau shire was mentioned in 1364. The oldest seal dates from 1481 and shows the local patron saint, the archangel St. Michael as a knight with helmet, and his classical attributes sword and scales. The 2nd seal from the 16th century does the same. On the 3rd seal vom 1678 the saint appears in the pose of a dragon slayer. In the second half of the 17th century he appears killing the dragon. In 1903 the State Archive of Baden designed arms for the village based on the old seal and fixed the tinctures arbitrarily.

Banner and coat of arms were approved on 12 March 1962 by Minister of Interior of Baden-Württemberg, published in GABl 139/1962. The same arms were approved before on 5 December 1959 by the former municipality.
