Egeln Coat of Arms

Shield Argent, a castle Gules masoned Sable with port and windows Argent, two towers topped by balls Or, open port wings Or and an open portcullis Or, in chief an impending inescutcheon Azure, charged with a lion rampant Or.
Meaning:
A modification of the city arms is displayed in the arms of the collective municipality, where the towers have been shortened and the colour of the portcullis was changed to black. Nearly all explanations can be transferred to the arms of the collective municipality. The castle is symbolising feistiness, protection and mutual help and for Egeln only the status of a city. The open port and portcullis are symbolising candour and welcome to strangers. The pattern of the arms was based upon a local seal from 1332 with a circumscription "S. CIVI TENSIUM IN EGELEN". The inescutcheon probably displays the family arms of the Barons of Hadmersleben, local rulers since around 1250, who established the local parish church and a Cistercian nunnery in the city, and who probably granted city rights in 1251. The kin died out around 1410.
