Coat of Arms

Shield Azure semy of fleur-de-lis Or, a knight proper in clad armour Argent, his right arm staked on a sword Argent, superimposed by a Gothic shield, his left arm holding a lance Argent with a tournament flag. Shield and flag have the same pattern: Gules, a triplemount issuant Vert, crowned by three fleur-de-lis Argent stemmed of the same.
Meaning:
The arms are based on the oldest seal of the city from the 13th century. The knight is probably St. Simplicius, patron saint of Fulda, as the city was ruled by the Bishops of Fulda. The stars on the seal gradually changed into small fleur-de-lis. The small shield and banner are also used as arms of the Bishops of Fulda. There is one picture of the arms from 1536 in which the small shield showed a castle instead of the lilies. Its origin is not known.
In 1956 the arms were shown as below, a much simpler version.
