It is a red - white -red horizontal vertical triband with ratio 1:3:1. The coat of arms is shifted to the top.

Coat of Arms

Description of coat of arms:
In a red field is a winged silver eel crowned golden. It is a so called French shield topped by a golden mural crown.
Meaning:
According to source the arms are canting. The winged eel appeared first on seals in 13th century. The current form was fixed arbitrarily in 1908, the same with the colours. As they had been unknown, the colours of the Prussian province of Westphalia had been taken.

The arms were granted by the king of Prussia on 5 December 1910. The mural crown then had been "stone-grey". The colour later was turned into golden. The banner, denoted as flag, was mentioned in §2(4) of Hauptsatzung of the city of Ahlen, dated 30 January 1960.

Description of flag:
The ratio is 3:5. It is a yellow over red over yellow horizontal triband with ratio 1:3:1. The coat of arms is in the middle of the central stripe.
