Ingenried Coat of Arms

Shield parted per pale, at dexter Argent a gridiron Azure, at sinister Gules a griffin-lion rampant Argent.
Meaning:
The gridiron is an attribute of st. Lawrence, who had been among others the Carolingian imperial patron saint. The iron is also alluding to the early forest clearance and the settlement of Saxons under Franconian rule. The saint is associated with the battle on the Lechfeld, were German King Otto I defeated the Hungarians in 955. The battlefield had been widespread and was extended until the Ingenried area. The saint is thus a helper in need against dangers from outside. The griffin-lion, a lion with a griffin's head, is reminding on the historical connections between the municipality and the Premonstratensian Steingaden Monastery. The existence of a settlement built by forest clearance was confirmed as a possession of the monastery by Pope Hadrian IV in 1156. The monastery had been also the manorial lord of Ingenried until 1785, when it was overhanded to the St. Mang Monastery in Füssen. The griffin-lion became part of the arms of the Steingaden monastery in 1441 and is said to display the oldest apocryphal arms of the Welfen kin. The kin founded the monasteryy in 1147.
