Joh Gorthon & Gorthon, O. Sten & Gorthon, Stig

[Joh Gorthon] image by Jarig Bakker

Joh Gorthon & Gorthon, O. Sten & Gorthon, Stig.: White with a blue circle in the centre containing two intertwined yellow stylised Gs (one reversed). I'd guess by the name, colours, and design that this is Swedish. Gorthon Rederier - Lloyd's description: White Ground; blue disc with yellow device based on G.

I have not found any source which shows the horizontal white line in the base on the emblem which is, according to Talbot-Booth, the same as the cipher of King Olav. Formed 1921 and according to Lloyds known as Gorthons Rederi A/B until 1987 when it became Gorthon Lines A/B, changing in 1995 to B&N Gorthon Lines A/B and then changing back again in 1997 to Gorthon Lines A/B. However post WW2 they themselves initially showed the fleet under separate headings for O. Sten Gorthon and Stig. Gorthon operating through subsidiaries.

Operated from Landskrona from pre-World War 2 to around the end of the 1950s using a blue flag with a narrow white band top and bottom and bearing a white star charged with a blue "L" being shown by US Navy 1961 [8].

Jonassons Rederier

Jonassons Jonassons
image contributed by Neale Rosanoski, 9 February 2007

Two cap badges are shown by Collectors Corner for the Göteborg company. Both are blue with a yellow horizontal band with one bearing a yellow "J" [see 36] and the other a larger "J" surmounting a smaller "R" both being yellow [see j35]. The company dates back to around 1915 originating with Anders Theodor Jonasson, being shown as Jonassons Rederier by World War 2 when it was presumably being run by his sons. The last vessels are said to have been sold 1948-1951 with the company then ceasing though Lloyds in the mid 1950s show a Jonassons Befraktnings A/B which may have been connected.

Kalmar, ship: S/S Kalmar, built 1916, +1923

white swallowtail with the firm's logo. The castle is probably from the arms of Kalmar city, but the image is sufficiently dim to represent something completely different.

Not an easy image to portray in small format. US Navy 1961 [8] varies it with the shield having a red frame on which appear 22 white stars, the building being a red castle of 2 outer towers each of which is ensigned with a yellow 5 pointed star Talbot-Booth 1937 [7a] and 1938 books show a blue tower.

Later flag

[Kalmarsund - later version] image contributed by Neale Rosanoski, 18 May 2006

There was a later change to a blue flag with a broad yellow horizontal band bearing a blue logo. A cap badge of this is shown by Collectors Corner but under the name of Kihlship which traces back to Lennart Kihlberg and Kihlberg-Rederierna A/B who were operators from the early 1970s and appear to have taken them over shortly afterwards, or alternatively they acquired part of the Kalmarsund fleet and retained them in the original livery. The flag is also shown by Josef Nüsse [5] as Swedish Gulf Line Shipping A/B after they had sent him the flag with the connection being that this company, which seems to be Kihlberg subsidiary, became agents for sundry ships previously shown under Kihlberg and this included the ex Kalmarsund vessels. That it was the Kalmarsund flag is, I am advised, confirmed by a letter from the company to the editor of Brown 1982 [3] in 1979 [2].

[Ångfartygs Aktiebolaget] Karin

[Karin] image contributed by Neale Rosanoski, 24 November 2006

[Ångfartygs Aktiebolaget] Karin of Helsingborg was operating around the early 20th century with a white swallowtail bearing a blue "K" shown by Lloyds 1904 & 1912 [1], Reed 1912 and the Liverpool Chamber of Commerce sheet of 1909 [14].

Karta och Oaxens Kalkbruk A/B

[Karta och Oaxens Kalkbruk] image contributed by Neale Rosanoski, 8 June 2007

A tug company of Stockholm from around 1916 to 1964. The flag was a blue swallowtail with a yellow horizontal band, slightly narrower than the resulting blue areas, and on which were the black letters "OAXEN" [see se~k67a.gif attached], being shown as a cap badge by Collectors Corner and on www.tugboatlars.se.

Timecharter för Iggesund - ship Breant - white flag, crowned blue anchor.
Jarig Bakker, 15 August 2005

This is not the flag of that company but of Iggesund A/B as shown by Brown 1995 [4] with the logo to be sighted on the website of Iggesund Paperboard A/B. It seems that at one period the company chartered vessels to transport its products with the connection in this case being the Kihlberg ship "Breant" which was built and time chartered to Iggesund from 1979 to 1981, the vessel being named after the Iggesund founder, the Frenchman Isak Breant who started an iron mill and adopted a crowned iron anchor as his emblem. The website shows no indication that there is still a shipping division.

Lennart Kihlberg who operated principally as Kihlberg-Rederierna A/B had a blue flag with a white "K" which is shown by Brown 1978 and a cap badge in Collectors Corner where it is shown under Kihlship which was another subsidiary.

[Ångfartygs Aktiebolaget] Kjell

[Kjell] image contributed by Neale Rosanoski, 24 November 2006

Based in Stockholm it operated from pre-World War 2 to the early 1960s. US Navy 1961 [8] shows a white flag with a blue "K" in the hoist. However the cap badge in Collectors Corner shows a swallowtail as shown for Ångfartygs A/B Karin.

Knut Bergquist

[Knut Bergquist] image contributed by Neale Rosanoski, 24 November 2006

Based Gothenburg and operating pre- and post-World War 2 until about the mid 1950s, US Navy 1961 [8] shows a blue swallowtailed flag with a yellow "B". As a different funnel is shown by Talbot-Booth for pre-war markings the flag may have been a later development.
